In many ways, the high school years are a staging ground for adulthood. For some students high school represents the culmination of their formal education. For others the high school years are preparatory, serving as a bridge to higher education. In either case, these few years are significant in students’ lives, but they don’t have to be intimidating. IEW offers many high school curriculum options that empower students to begin college or careers with confidence. This blog post will examine the possibilities.
For high school students who are ready to dip their quills into college writing a bit early, IEW recently partnered with Christian Halls to provide an opportunity that allows students to earn dual credit while they are still in high school. By working through and completing Structure and Style for Students: Year 1 Level C and Fix It! Grammar: Level 5 Frog Prince, students can earn dual credit for both high school and college (Comp I and Comp II). Students submit assignments in all nine of IEW’s structural units as well as hone their grammar skills by editing a story with embedded errors. In the process they will strengthen their writing and upon successful completion will earn six college credit hours too. To learn more about this exciting opportunity, listen to Podcast Episode 331.
The same courses can also be completed for high school credit alone if desired. Students can work independently at home or gather as a group at a co-op. Alternatively, parents can hire one of IEW’s many Accredited Instructors to serve as a teacher or tutor. As another option, many students enjoy taking one of IEW’s online classes. These classes are very popular, and seats fill quickly, so if you think your student might be interested, be sure to sign up to be notified when registration opens.
Most students who enter college are required to take three English classes regardless of their major: Comp I, Comp II, and a literature course, which focuses on literary analysis. IEW offers two courses in particular that address not only writing through the structural units but also literary analysis. Structure and Style for Students: Year 2 Level C is a robust college preparatory writing course that includes literary analysis as a component of the units of structure. Students are taught via video (either Forever Streaming or DVDs) by Andrew Pudewa. This course is the perfect follow up to Structure and Style for Students: Year 1 Level C.
The second course to consider is Bible-Based Writing Lessons, one of IEW’s theme-based curriculum offerings. In these lessons all nine structural units are addressed, and literary analysis is also included. Teachers presenting this course should have received teacher training through Teaching Writing: Structure and Style. Whichever course you select, continue to strengthen your student’s understanding of grammar concepts by adding in Fix It! Grammar: Level 6 Little Mermaid (or the level of the Fix It! Grammar program that best fits your student’s needs).
In addition to the general education English courses, many college programs also require students to enroll in a course that focuses on public speaking. IEW has a curriculum to prepare students for that as well. Introduction to Public Speaking is a twelve-week course that will help students develop their confidence and competence in public speaking. Another program that is great for students of all ages is Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization. Utilizing a mastery-based approach to poetry memorization, this program provides students with plenty of opportunities to practice their memorization and elocution skills, using classic poetry and speeches.
