The continuing conversation about the language arts turns to a new direction in Episode 205. During this episode Andrew Pudewa and Julie Walker discuss reading and how it interlaces with the other language arts. Together the two converse about reading in a number of different contexts, first by Andrew describing Anna Ingham’s effective approach to teaching reading, spelling, and writing through her Blended Sound-Sight Program of Learning. This program provided the genesis for IEW’s Primary Arts of Language Reading and Writing programs.

Further into the conversation, Andrew talks about how to effectively teach reading as well as how to inspire students of all ages to enjoy reading. After discussing it in a general sense, he goes on to detail specific ways teachers can inspire their students and children to develop their reading skills that are developmentally appropriate for the stage of learning they are in.

Perhaps more than any other educational objective, parents and educators stress the most about teaching students to read effectively. And that stress ramps up when reading feels delayed. Andrew encourages listeners to not stress, outlining ways they can fertilize the field for emergent readers by laying a foundation of phonics instruction alongside listening to quality literature delivered through audiobooks.
