Believe it or not, it is almost time to start back to school. In one form or another, whether it be traditional brick and mortar, a hybrid approach, online, or at home, the fall semester will begin. Ready or not, here we go! In recent months we have been sharing some free resources, hoping to inspire and encourage teachers and students. Just in case you have missed these, we are sharing them here again today and hope you will also pass them along to others who might benefit.
The first free resource we would like to highlight is the recording of our recent writing conference, From Imitation to Innovation. Not only are there sessions that will empower you as a teacher, but there are two sessions of student instruction, the first a Level A writing class and the second a Level B grammar class. If you have students joining your Structure and Style classes who are new to IEW, these classes are a great way to introduce them ahead of time to Units 1 and 2 as well as some basics of style and editing. Not only that, but offer the conference to your students’ parents. The sessions will provide a glimpse of what Structure and Style is about.
In addition to the above, we are still offering three weeks of free lessons on our free lessons page. We first curated these lessons in early spring of 2020 to help teachers and families bridge the gap when their students’ instruction was interrupted by COVID-19. Since then we have continued to share this package of lessons, offered at three different levels (Levels A, B, and C). You can have your students of all ages watch the classes and complete the assignments, and when they enter your classroom, they will be ready to pick up with their peers in their compositional endeavors and will be started on a path to writing success. Everything you need to teach the material is included.
There are two components to the lessons:
- Structure and Style for Students (the first three lessons)
- Fix It! Grammar (the first week’s lesson)
Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization is an excellent course that is perfect for students of all ages as well as adults. Included in the free lessons are the student pages, which feature charming blackline drawings that students can color, the downloadable teacher’s manual, and the MP3 audio of the complete first level of the program. The poems are practiced orally and follow a Suzuki-based approach to mastery. Students strengthen their linguistic “muscle” through memorizing and reciting the poetry, growing their vocabulary as well as their syntax, which in turn helps to develop comprehension.
